Shackles are the connectors every lift runs through, and picking between the four basic combinations — anchor or chain body, screw pin or bolt closure — decides how safe and serviceable the connection is. Here's the selection logic riggers actually use.
Anchor (Bow) vs Chain (D)
Anchor shackles have a rounded bow with room for multiple sling legs or wide synthetic slings — the general-purpose lifting shackle, and the only correct choice for side-loaded or multi-leg connections (with side-load de-rating). Browse our anchor shackles. Chain (D) shackles have a narrow body designed for single in-line pulls; loading a D shackle sideways or with multiple legs bends the body. Screw-pin anchor shackles cover most day-to-day rigging.
Screw Pin vs Bolt-Type
Screw pin shackles connect fast and suit picks where the shackle is rigged and unrigged each lift — but the pin can back out under vibration or if the load rolls the pin. Bolt-type (nut and cotter) shackles are the rule for permanent installations, long-term rigging, and any application with vibration or where the shackle may rotate: the cotter pin makes unintentional loosening essentially impossible. Round pin shackles (cotter only, no threads) are for tie-down and suspension only — never overhead lifting with side load.
Side Loading De-Rates
| Angle from in-line | Rated capacity |
|---|---|
| 0° (in-line) | 100% |
| 45° | 70% |
| 90° | 50% |
When two sling legs land in one shackle bow, the included angle between them should not exceed 120°.
Working Rules
Seat the pin fully and hand-tight plus a wrench snug (never past); center point loads on the pin, not the threads; never replace a shackle pin with a bolt — bolts aren't rated for the bending; and don't pull a shackle whose pin can roll under a moving sling. Applied loads should bear on the bow and pin, with the load centered.
Inspection
Remove from service for: illegible markings, wear over 10% of original dimension at any point, bent or twisted body, nicks and gouges, pin that doesn't seat flush, stretched crown (increased throat opening), and any heat or weld damage. A shackle with a mismatched pin — wrong size, wrong brand — is retired on the spot.
