Turnbuckles put adjustable tension into rigging — guy lines, sway bracing, standing rigging, and tie-rod assemblies all depend on them. Selection is three choices: end fittings, size, and locking. Get all three right and the assembly holds tension for years.

End Fitting Combinations

Jaw ends pin to fixed points and hardware. Eye ends take shackles and thimbled rope eyes. Hook ends connect fastest — and disconnect fastest, which is why hooks are only for applications where the line can never go slack; a momentary slack line lets a hook fall out. Sizing

Turnbuckles are specified by thread diameter × take-up (the adjustment length). Typical WLLs for forged jaw-jaw: 1/2" = 2,200 lb, 3/4" = 5,200 lb, 1" = 10,000 lb, 1-1/2" = 21,400 lb — verify against the manufacturer's chart, and note hook-end versions rate lower than jaw/eye at the same size. Choose take-up length for the adjustment you actually need: take-up is roughly the working stroke, and longer bodies make tensioning easier.

Rigging Rules

Tension by turning the body, holding end fittings from twisting — twisting the line into the turnbuckle side-loads the threads. Leave at least one thread diameter of engagement showing inside the body at full extension; never unscrew to the last threads. Align the turnbuckle with the line of pull; turnbuckles take tension only — no bending, no side load.

Locking Against Vibration

Any turnbuckle in vibrating or dynamic service walks loose without positive locking: lock nuts snugged against the body, wire the end fittings to the body (aircraft-style safety wire), or use manufacturer lock pins/plates. Structural and long-term installations should be wired as a default.

Inspection

Retire for bent bodies or end fittings, thread damage or excessive play, cracks at the jaw radius, spread hooks, and corrosion pitting. Straightening a bent turnbuckle is prohibited — forged fittings that have yielded are scrap.
