Round Slings: Color Codes, Capacities & Care

Round slings pack remarkable capacity into a soft, light package — an endless loop of polyester yarn inside a woven cover, color-coded by capacity. They conform to irregular loads, grip in a choke better than flat web, and a 10,000-lb round sling weighs a fraction of the wire rope equivalent. Used within their rules, they're the most operator-friendly sling made.

How They're Built

The load is carried entirely by continuous loops of high-tenacity polyester yarn; the double-wall cover carries no load — it exists to protect the core. That design means two things: cover damage that exposes core yarns is automatic retirement, and the endless format lets riggers rotate contact points to spread wear around the sling.

Color Code & Capacities

Color Typical vertical WLL
Purple 2,600 lb
Green 5,300 lb
Yellow 8,400 lb
Tan 10,600 lb
Red 13,200 lb
White 16,800 lb
Blue 21,200 lb

Colors follow industry convention but are not a standard — the tag is the rating, the color is a convenience. Choker ≈ 80% of vertical, basket = 200%, with the usual angle reductions.

Working Rules

Keep hardware seated: hooks, shackles, and lifting points must be wide enough that the sling isn't pinched or bunched — a round sling loaded over a too-small hook loses capacity. Never pull a snagged sling free under load, never knot one, and pad every edge: like all synthetics, a loaded round sling fails instantly when cut. Temperature limit is 194°F.

Retirement Criteria

Remove from service for: missing/illegible tag, any cut or hole exposing core yarns, visible core yarn damage, melting/charring, chemical stiffening or discoloration, crushed or snagged cover, or damaged fittings on connected hardware. The cover is your inspection surface — if it's compromised, the sling is done.
