Between the crane hook and the sling sits a family of forged hardware — master links, hooks, swivels, and connecting links — that assembles slings into systems. Every component in that chain rates the assembly at its weakest member, so knowing the parts and their rules is what turns a pile of hardware into a rated bridle.
Master Links & Rings
The oblong master link is the top of every bridle — sized to seat properly in the crane hook (link must sit freely in the hook saddle, never point-loaded on the tip) and rated for the total sling assembly. Sub-assemblies use intermediate links; three- and four-leg bridles hang pairs of legs from sub-links off the master. Master links are proof-tested components with markings — unmarked rings are not rigging.
Hooks: Types & the 15% Rule
Sling hooks (with latches) are the general connection; grab hooks pocket a chain link to shorten legs — cradle-style grabs preserve chain rating, standard grabs may de-rate 20%; foundry hooks have wide throats for trunnions, no latch, for dedicated applications; swivel hooks relieve twist — note that positioning swivels are not load-rated to rotate under load, while true bearing swivels are. Remove any hook with throat opening spread more than 15% or twist over 10° — per ASME B30.10 — and any hook with a sprung or missing latch where latches are required. See our hoist hooks collection.
Connecting Links
Mechanical coupling links (hammerlok/lok-a-loy style) join chain to fittings at full chain rating — the only field-installable connectors permitted in lifting chain. Quick links, lap links, and threaded repair links are for utility duty only, never overhead lifting.
Assembly Rules
Match grades throughout (G100 chain gets G100 fittings), verify every component's WLL covers the worst-case leg tension at your sling angle, seat everything — links in hook saddles, pins fully engaged — and tag the finished assembly with its rated capacity as configured. An assembly's rating is a system property; changing one component re-rates the system.
Inspection Quick List
Wear over 10% at bearing points, stretch or distortion, cracks (especially at hook saddles and link welds), gouges, heat damage, and illegible markings — any one removes the component.
