Wire Rope Slings: Selection, Capacity & Inspection Guide

Wire rope slings are the default choice for hot, abrasive, and heavy lifts — tougher than synthetics against edges and temperature, more flexible than chain for basketing loads. Selecting one comes down to rope construction, end fittings, hitch, and the capacity math at your sling angle.

Construction Basics

Most lifting slings are 6×19 or 6×36 class EIPS (extra improved plow steel) rope with an IWRC (independent wire rope core). 6×19 wears longer against abrasion; 6×36 is more flexible for the same diameter — the usual pick above 1" rope. Fiber core slings are limited to lighter duty and lose capacity at temperature; IWRC is the standard for industrial lifting.

Common Configurations

Single-leg eye-and-eye with flemish eye splices and steel sleeves is the workhorse. Thimble eyes protect against wear where slings attach to shackles and hooks repeatedly. Two-, three-, and four-leg bridle slings on a master link handle multi-point picks. Socketed and swaged fittings serve permanent or engineered lifts.

Sling angle cuts capacity fast: legs at 60° from horizontal retain 87% of vertical rating, 45° retains 71%, and 30° only 50%. Always read capacity from the sling's tag at the angle you're actually rigging — never from memory.

Inspection & Removal Criteria

Per ASME B30.9, remove a wire rope sling from service for: missing or illegible tag, broken wires (10 randomly distributed in one rope lay, or 5 in one strand in one lay), kinks, crushing, birdcaging, core protrusion, heat damage, corrosion pitting, or damaged end fittings. Inspect before each use and document periodic inspections.

Edge Protection Isn't Optional

A sharp corner can cut a wire rope sling at a fraction of rated load. Pad every edge contact — corner protectors, softeners, or engineered edge blocks — and never allow the rope to bend around a diameter smaller than the fitting or hook saddle it was designed for.
