Load binders tension transport chain across flatbed loads, and the ratchet-vs-lever question is the oldest argument at the truck stop. The mechanics settle it: each style trades speed against control, and DOT securement math decides how many you need.
Lever Binders (Snap Binders)
A lever binder tensions in one throw — fast on, fast off. The costs: the lever stores energy, so it can snap back during release (the classic binder injury); tension is whatever the operator's arm delivers, so it varies; and cheater pipes multiply force past ratings and past control — they're prohibited by manufacturers. Lever binders suit experienced operators making many stops, tied off with the handle secured so road vibration can't flip it open.
Ratchet Binders
A ratchet binder tensions with a short back-and-forth stroke — slower, but the screw mechanism means no stored-energy snapback, controlled incremental tension, and easy controlled release. Take-up is longer than a lever binder's, taming slack chain. For most fleets and any less-experienced crew, ratchet binders are the default recommendation — the injury profile alone justifies them.

DOT Securement Basics
FMCSA requires aggregate WLL of tie-downs ≥ half the cargo weight, with tie-down count driven by article length and weight (an article over 10 ft needs a tie-down for each 10 ft or fraction). Direct vs indirect tie-downs count differently — run the calculation per 49 CFR 393, not by habit.
Inspection
Retire binders for bent handles or hooks, cracked welds, damaged threads or pawls, spread hooks, and any binder that's been cheater-piped (look for handle deformation). Chain rules from our chain grades guide apply to the G70 alongside it.
